Please complete and submit Math Journal #1 to Sesame by the end of this week. (See the Filing Cabinet page)

Let’s discuss any issues from yesterday’s topic: multiplying binomials. You will need to use this skill today!

First, let’s look at a couple different equations using the graphing calculator:

  • y = 2(x+3)(x+5)
  • y = 2(x+4)² -2

What do you notice?

Using your graphing calculator, you will investigate the standard form of a quadratic relation. We will discuss what connections and patterns become evident. We will then look at how to move from both factored and vertex form to standard form. By moving from one form to another we can learn more about what he graph of the relation might look like.

You will also get some practice.

If you finish, check and update the tracking sheet for the course, and review the Quizlet for vocabulary.

Wednesday, March 2, 2016: Multiplying Binomials

This is a short day, so class is 1 hour.

We will review the idea of multiplying two binomials. We will begin by showing what this might look like using a handshake analogy.

Next we will review three different strategies for multiplying binomials

  • Algebra tiles
  • Chart
  • FOIL

You will get a chance to practice multiplying using a method you choose.

Find a partner. Each partner should create a binomial multiplication question (be sure to solve it!) Switch questions with you partner and solve. Once you think you have the solution, show your partner to see if you are correct.

Try some practice on your own with the “Binomial Multiplication” questions.

Exit Slip: Which of the three methods that we examined today do you prefer to use? Why?
