Learning Goal
I will use exponential relations (growth and decay) to investigate and model real-world relationships.

I will use mathematical problem solving processes to solve real-world problems

I will explain my process and my findings using mathematical vocabulary

Today we will start by reviewing the problems from last day’s class.

Next, we will review the processes for solving word problems. We are doing this, so that we can prepare to solve our own real-world problems.

For your unit summative task, you will be asked to research or choose a scenario that can be modelled by an exponential relation. Your mission is to prepare a presentation to showcase your findings.

Learning Goal

I am learning to

  • use exponential relations (growth and decay) to model real-world relationships

Review from exit slips…

Exponent rules quiz

We will take up and use this to reflect on what we know:

  1. Rate your skills out of 5 when it comes to working with exponents.
  2. What concept do you need to spend some more time on?

Germs! Germs! Germs!

We will work in groups today to model exponential growth. You will present your findings.

Lastly, we will review some strategies for solving word problems, and you will practice with some exponential word problems.

Here are some examples of the work from the activity today:

Learning Goals

I will identify that a base to the exponent of zero is ONE
I will identify that negative exponents are reciprocals
I will connect the initial value in an exponential pattern involves a zero exponent
I will use negative exponents to “look back in time” at an exponential relation

PG 161 #6 is due. Please put it in the inbox.

We are going to review some key concepts from the last day with a new tool – clickers! This will be a way for you to check and see where your skills are right now.

Next, we will look at the following exponent:

We will use some patterning to work backwards to find

2–³

We will use this pattern to help us write different fractions as exponents. This pattern will also show us what a zero exponent means. Finally, we will summarize our learning from this investigation and our discussions into two exponent rules.

You can practice these exponent rules here:

Learning Goal: I am learning to

  •  define exponential decay and decay factor
  • identify that exponential functions can be represented by the general equation y=ab∧x and identify what the “a” “b” and “x” represent
  • determine whether an equation is an exponential relation
  • represent exponential decay through a table, equation, and graph

We will investigate what an exponential decay relation looks like. You will each get 100 coins in your small groups. Use the instructions on PG 157 in your text. Make notes as you perform this investigation. We will use this as a basis for our notes on exponential decay.

Once we have looked at your results and summarized our findings, compare this to our work last day. How are exponential growth and exponential decay related?

We will try a few problems together, then in your groups you will practice.

Your independent practice can be found on PG 159-160 #1-4, 6

The folding paper myth

How many times can you fold a piece of paper? There is a story going around that says you can only fold a piece of paper up to 7 times. Let’s see if this holds true…

We are going to investigate this ourselves today! You will need a textbook and graph paper. Complete the investigation on PG 151. Discuss with your partner the “Reflect” questions – record in your notes the big ideas from the discussion.

We will use this investigation and ideas from it to summarize and make notes about what we have learned.

You will work on some practice from the text PG 155 #6, PG 153-155 #1-4.

Your exit slip for today is to answer the “In Your Own Words” on PG 155 and submit to the class bin.
